Having Fun At Chuck Town Axe Throwing

by Shakeima Chatman

Did you know Charleston is home to a bar where you can throw some axes? In this episode of North Chuck Hookup, I’m going to take you to Chuck Town Axe Throwing right here in North Charleston. We’ll learn about everything from technique to throwing tips so you can make the most out of your experience.

All About Chuck Town Axe Throwing

Chuck Town Axe Throwing is Charleston’s premier axe throwing location. We had a chance to talk with Derek, a part of the management at Chuck Town. He gave us an inside look at the venue before the crowds arrive.

Whether you’re attending a bachelor or bachelorette party, going on a date, or meeting up with friends and family, Chuck Town is a great way to have fun. When you arrive, staff will explain the instructions, techniques, and how to score the game. The venue is also attached to a brewery, so food and drinks are just a step away.

Chuck Town recommends axe throwing for ages 12 and older, with kids required to be under parental supervision. Kids younger can come to hang out, as it’s a very friendly family environment. You’ll also need to wear close-toed shoes, as you don’t want to drop an axe on bare feet.

Getting Into The Swing Of Things

As Derek tells us, there are a few different steps to kind swinging the axe and making sure it’s a good throw. Some people are nervous and afraid to commit when they throw their first axe, but being successful requires putting power behind the motion. The more throws you make, the more comfortable you’ll become. You can then take that power and channel it into the board, getting your frustrations out.

The first step is to have your feet planted but slightly offset. You can start with your feet together and step into it, as long as you make your way up to the axe throwing line. Bringing the axe straight over the top of the head until it’s resting right between the shoulder blades allows time for the axe to make a full revolution once you throw.

When axe throwing, you also want to use your body. This will generate the energy needed for the axe to stick into the board. To accomplish this, lean back as you're getting ready to throw. Once you step into the throw, follow through as you would in a golf swing while letting go of the axe in the middle of the arc.
