Pros and Cons Of Charleston Living

by Shakeima Chatman

Are you thinking about moving to Charleston and need someone to tell you what it’s really like? In this episode of The North Chuck Hookup, I'm going to give you the good, the bad, and the ugly of living in Charleston. We’ll explore everything from beaches to bugs so you know exactly what to expect.

Why People Are Moving To Charleston

Let’s look at some great things about living in Charleston and some not-so-great things. Living in Charleston has its pros and cons, just like every place. We're going to start by giving you the top reason people are moving to Charleston: our beaches.

Whether you're in Summerville, Moncks Corner, Mount Pleasant, or North Charleston, you're minutes away from miles of sandy beaches. From Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, and Folly Beach to Mosquito Beach, you have plenty to choose from.

Second, we have restaurants on every block that are guaranteed to fill your southern appetite. If you're visiting the West Ashley area, make sure to stop by Beare-E-Patch patch and try the Harbour Saute. Tell him Alicia sent you!

Lastly, people are moving to Charleston because of our climate. Our average temperature is about 97 degrees Fahrenheit for the summer and about 30 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter—perfect for running from those winter northern cells.

The Cons

Now that we know some of the pros, I’m going to give you the lowdown on some of the cons. If you're really serious about moving here, you're going to need to know some of these things. Con number one is our heat. While this is also a pro, Charleston’s humidity and our long summers can be difficult. You're going to have to know whether you can deal with the heat.

Con number two is our traffic. Yes, you are going to need to plan ahead. Make sure you plan an extra 15 minutes for commuting to and from work. Our last con is our bugs. Charleston is a warm climate, and we do have mosquitoes. Also, don't get too skittish if you’re get visited by one of our Palmetto bugs. I'll let you research that one on your own.
